Liverpool are reportedly unsettled by growing claims that Real Madrid expect to secure the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold by the summer, with shocking suggestions that a deal could even be completed before the January transfer window closes.
The Reds’ vice-captain delivered an unusually inconsistent performance on Sunday, as Manchester United battled to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Despite the result, Liverpool maintain a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand over closest rivals Arsenal.

During the match, Alexander-Arnold faced significant difficulties and was finally substituted in the 86th minute for Connor Bradley. Speculation soon emerged that Real Madrid’s transfer interest had distracted the right-back. The Spanish giants had reportedly made an initial bid of just €20 million (£16.6m, $20.7m), which Liverpool swiftly rejected. The nature of the offer may have unsettled the player, drawing criticism from pundit Gary Neville, who was quick to condemn the approach.
Now, with Real Madrid preparing an improved bid, The Athletic’s Spanish football expert Mario Cortegana has revealed the club’s growing belief that they will secure Alexander-Arnold’s signature.
“It’s been a hectic week at Real Madrid, with a primary focus on Trent Alexander-Arnold,” wrote Cortegana. “Sources familiar with the situation have described the recent days as ‘crazy.’
“The spark was ignited on December 31, when Real Madrid made an inquiry to Liverpool regarding a possible January transfer for the right-back. His contract runs until June, and he hasn’t agreed to an extension. However, Liverpool’s refusal meant no detailed financial discussions took place despite some reports.”
However, it seems unlikely the player will abandon Liverpool midway through the campaign, particularly with the club strongly positioned to compete for major silverware.
The unfolding saga promises to be one of the biggest transfer stories in the coming months, leaving Liverpool fans on edge as Real Madrid’s interest intensifies.
